The Cover Letter

The cover letter is a "companion" to your resume and can provide a customized, personal introduction to you.

With a good cover letter, you can
  • focus on the opportunity without redoing your resume
  • call attention to specific highlights in your resume
  • distinguish yourself from the competition with a crisp, well-written communication
Cover Letter Tips
  • Address your cover letter to the individual reading your resume and use their name and title.
  • The cover letter should be one page in length (maximum). Use short sentences and plenty of white space. Preferably, your text should take up no more than half the page.
  • Use a standard four-paragraph outline:
    • State your strongest points
    • Tell the reader why you want to work for this company
    • Highlight your skills and qualifications
    • Request an interview and suggest how you will follow up
  • The top reason resumes and cover letters are trashed is poor spelling and grammar. Use a dictionary, The Chicago Manual of Style, a computer spell checker, and/or an objective reader to review your spelling and grammar before you send your resume out.
